Under New York law the school budget vote and board election take place on the third Tuesday in May unless a district sets another date, and a winter rental ends around Memorial Day weekend. If your lease ends then, start the conversation about staying year-round before the month begins.

School budget vote

The New York State School Boards Association says the annual school budget vote and school board election occur on the third Tuesday in May unless a district sets another date. Every district on the East End votes on its own budget, including the small districts that are home to a few dozen students. The school districts page lists them.

Winter leases

A winter rental, as a long-running Curbed feature put it, runs through “the entire off-season from the week after Labor Day right up until the following Memorial Day Weekend.” Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. Anyone living in a winter rental should hold their move-out date against that weekend.

The heating season

The state’s heating-season rule for multiple dwellings runs from October 1 through May 31, per the Attorney General’s tenant guide. It does not cover most single-family houses; those follow the lease. Oil and propane tanks still need a delivery schedule; the heating guide explains how deliveries work.

Weather and light

May averages a high of 65° and a low of 47° at Bridgehampton. Sunrise on the 15th is 5:32 a.m. and sunset 7:58 p.m., with 14 h 26 min of daylight.
