Sag Harbor is a village in two towns. It lies partly in the Town of Southampton and partly in the Town of East Hampton, which means trash permits and rental registration depend on which side of the line your address falls. The Census counts 2,489 residents, 44% of homes seasonal, and the highest median gross rent among the places on this site, $3,501. For what is listed, see Sag Harbor rentals on Hamptons Key.

Renting here

The rent figure rests on 191 renter households, 17% of the village, so read it as “expensive.” The median home value is $1,615,900 and median household income $129,821. Ask the owner which town’s registry applies to the property, and ask the Village Clerk (55 Main Street, 631-725-0222) whether a village rule does as well. The permit guide lists both towns’ rules.

Schools

The Sag Harbor Union Free School District runs an elementary school and Pierson Middle/High School, 932 students in all. A renter must present a fully executed lease and two current documents in the renter’s name. See the district page and the enrollment guide.

Healthcare and services

The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department at 400 Pantigo Place lists Sag Harbor among the communities it serves; see the East Hampton emergency department. The John Jermain Memorial Library, at 201 Main Street, gives free cards to all residents of the Sag Harbor school district with a picture ID and proof of a local address.

For trash, an address on the Southampton side uses the Town’s green bags and its Sag Harbor Recycling Center on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike (open Thursday through Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., per the Town); an address on the East Hampton side would follow the East Hampton Town permit; confirm with the Village Clerk.

Heat, power and internet

Utility gas serves 32% of households, oil 43% and electricity 11%. The Census puts work-from-home at 26%. See internet on the East End.

Winter

The Bridgehampton normals apply: a January low of 23° and February snow of 8.6 inches. A winter weekend in Sag Harbor lists the places that stay open.
