Hamptons Year Round

East Hampton Town recycling center permits

An annual self-hauler permit runs April 1 to March 31. Where to get it, what it costs in the village, and how Montauk works.

Published by Liberty Design Studio

East Hampton Town sells an annual permit to residents who haul their own trash and recycling. The permit year runs from April 1 to March 31 and is not prorated, so a permit bought in March buys you a few weeks. If you are about to rent in the Town, see year-round rentals in East Hampton and put a permit on your list of first-week errands.

What the Town says

According to the Town’s mail-in application, residents who self-haul household trash and designated recyclables to the Town Recycling Center must buy a primary self-hauler permit once a year. A second permit is available by mail. The Town runs two facilities:

Facility Where Contact
East Hampton Recycling Center 260 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton, NY 11937 631-324-7191
Montauk Transfer Station Off Montauk Highway, just before the Montauk hamlet Permits at the Town Clerk’s office at the Montauk Playhouse

Hours and the fee schedule change, and the Town publishes them on its own site, so confirm both with the Sanitation Department before you drive out.

East Hampton Village

There is no garbage pickup in the Village of East Hampton. Per the Village, residents choose between two options. The first is to buy a Residential Recycling Permit through the Town Clerk’s Office, with proof of residency, at 631-324-4142. The Village’s page lists $115 for a primary permit and $40 for a secondary one, with a $55 primary permit for residents 65 and older. The second is to hire a private waste management company.

Ask the Clerk which documents count as proof of residency before you go. If you rent, bring whatever shows your address in the Town.

Montauk

Montauk residents use the Montauk Transfer Station rather than the Springs Fireplace Road site. The Town’s facility page says permits are obtained at the Clerk’s office at the Montauk Playhouse. See the Montauk profile for the rest of daily life there.

How it differs from the neighbors

Place System
Town of East Hampton Annual self-hauler permit, April 1 to March 31
Town of Southampton No permit; green bags bought at stores. See Southampton Town
Town of Shelter Island Town bags; see Shelter Island

Renters

The Town’s rule covers residents who haul their own household waste. Ask the Clerk’s office how a lease counts as proof of residency, and ask the owner whether a private carter is already under contract for the house. Then put the April 1 renewal on your calendar. The April almanac lists it with the other spring deadlines.
