In New York you register at your county board of elections, at an agency-based registration center, at the DMV or online. For the East End the county board is the Suffolk County Board of Elections. The state’s Online Voter Registration portal needs a NY.gov ID, and the same portal updates a new name, a new address or a change in party enrollment. If you are new to the East End, do this alongside the DMV address change.
Ways to register
- Online: use the state’s portal with a NY.gov ID. Completed applications go to the county board of elections for approval.
- On paper: complete the New York State Voter Registration Form, print it, sign and date it, and mail or deliver it. The state says it cannot accept digital or Adobe-generated signatures.
- In person: at the county board, a state agency-based registration center or the DMV, including the DMV’s website if you already have DMV-issued identification.
- By request: the state mails forms on request, and its hotline is 1-800-FOR-VOTE (1-800-367-8683).
Dates that recur
- The state says address-change notices received at least 15 days before a special, primary or general election must be processed in time for that election.
- Party enrollment changes for a primary must be received by the board no later than February 14. See the February almanac.
- The Suffolk board posts a “register by” date for each election on its calendar. For the November 3, 2026 general election it listed October 24, 2026, ten days before the election.
Check your record
The county board links the state’s lookup, where a registered voter can check their registration and polling place, and the board posts early voting locations and sample ballots for each election.
Registration and tax residency
Registering in Suffolk County is worth doing if you live here, but it does not settle your tax residency by itself. The state’s instructions say easily controlled factors such as where you vote are not primary factors in establishing domicile. Read the residency page if you keep a city home.
