The East End has three town governments and the seven villages covered here, and which one handles a task depends on your address. Towns run trash, rental permits and the clerk’s licenses; villages run their own zoning and sometimes their own rules on trash and rentals. Sag Harbor sits in two towns at once. The table gives the clerk’s address and number for each. If you are still choosing a place, see year-round rentals by town.

East Hampton’s Town Clerk lists beach parking, beach driving, shellfish and recycling permits, marriage licenses, peddler and taxi licenses, dog licenses, contractor licenses and vital records. For trash, see the permit guide; for rentals, see rental permits.

Sagaponack’s fiscal year begins June 1, and its village tax bills go out at the end of May, according to the village clerk’s page. The villages are inside the towns, so you may deal with both. For example, the Village of East Hampton has no garbage pickup and sends residents to the Town Clerk for a recycling permit.
