Sign up for three systems: the county’s, your town’s and your electric utility’s. SuffolkAlert is the official emergency notification system used by Suffolk County emergency managers and public safety officials to communicate with the community. The Town of Southampton and the Town of East Hampton run their own, and PSEG Long Island handles outages. Do it before the first storm, and add it to your first winter checklist.
What each one covers
| System | Covers | Sign-up |
|---|---|---|
| SuffolkAlert | Countywide emergency alerts such as severe weather warnings and significant highway closures | Suffolk County’s SuffolkAlert page |
| Southampton Alerts (CivicReady) | Emergency alerts, town facility closings, road closures, Dune Road closures and emergencies, U.S. Open traffic updates and messages for Quogue village residents | Southampton’s alerts page |
| East Hampton Civic Ready alerts | Emergency alerts before, during and after an emergency | East Hampton’s notification page |
| PSEG Long Island | Outage reports and restoration status | PSEG’s outage page |
Southampton says subscribers can choose phone, text message, email or a combination. East Hampton says it sends alerts by text, email, pager or voice mail, depending on your preferences.
Outages
To report an outage, PSEG Long Island’s number is 1-800-490-0075, 24 hours a day, and the company says downed wires must be called in. The electric service guide lists the text and app options.
Make a plan
An alert is only useful if you have a plan for it. Know which road floods, where the shutoffs are and how you would heat the house without power. Nor’easters and power outages covers the storm side.
