PSEG Long Island runs the electric system for Long Island, and the company’s pages cover service for Long Island and the Rockaways. A new residential customer requests service on the company’s website, and the company says it emails a confirmation once the request is complete. If you are moving, plan this step into the first week; the move checklist puts it before the DMV.
Start service
The company’s “Turning on Electric Service” page offers Start, Stop and Move choices for residential customers, and separate links for existing and new customers. A new customer fills in a short online form, “About You” and “Your Location,” with a Social Security number or the proper documentation described in the form. The company says that once the service is active you will receive a My Account registration email in three business days, and your first bill will arrive within the first 30 days. Time-of-Day pricing is the standard rate for all new residential accounts.
If the home already has an account in the landlord’s name, ask the owner about transferring it rather than starting a second one. The utilities checklist for renters lists the other accounts to open.
Reporting an outage
PSEG Long Island offers several ways to report one:
- By phone, 24 hours a day: 1-800-490-0075. The company says downed wires must be called in.
- Online: through My Account or as a guest.
- In the PSEG Long Island app, which includes an Outage Tracker.
- By text: the company’s page lists texting OUT to 773454 to report an outage and STAT to 773454 to check restoration.
The company also publishes a four-step restoration process and an outage map. During large storms it may show “Assessing Conditions” while crews survey damage. For the East End’s storm season, see nor’easters and power outages.
Critical care customers
If you or someone in your household relies on life-support equipment, PSEG Long Island runs a Critical Care Program you can enroll in. The program page is linked from its storm-preparation pages. Enroll before the storm season, not during it.
