Water service on the East End

Starting Suffolk County Water Authority service as a tenant, with the listed fees and deposit.

Published by Liberty Design Studio

The Suffolk County Water Authority supplies water across much of Suffolk County, and a tenant starts service with a short online request. Not every address is on it, so ask the owner who supplies the house before you apply. The rental utilities checklist lists that question alongside heat and trash.

What the Authority lists

On its start-service page, for a residential tenant, the Authority lists:

Charge Amount
Initiation fee $30.00
Basic service charge, quarterly $35.45
Water quality treatment fee, quarterly $20.00
Tenant deposit $50.00

Owners pay no deposit. The deposit and fees appear on your first bill, and you can add AutoPay online one business day after your start date. The Authority publishes a full schedule of fees. Treat the figures above as the amounts on the page when it was checked in October 2026.

How to apply

The request takes about five minutes and asks for a photo ID. The Authority reviews every request and emails a confirmation. The page offers separate paths for residential and commercial customers and for stopping service when you move out. When you stop service, a technician shuts off the water the day after closing and takes a final reading, and the final bill goes to your forwarding address with any deposit applied.

Ask these first

  • Is the house on the Water Authority, another public system or a private well?
  • If it is a well, who tests it and when was it last tested?
  • Are the meter and account in the owner’s name or yours?

For electric and the rest of the move-in sequence, see starting electric service and the move checklist.
